Tubeless Tape And Valve Install

Like videos, here’s a quick one on how to install our tape and valves.

Lots of people overcomplicate their tubeless tire install and set up, but it’s much easier than you think.

First don’t over think it. The goal is to seal the the rim and tire into an airtight chamber. Your tape doesn’t need to be the exact width of your rim, or wider as some suggest. It just needs to be close. In this video, I’m setting up a set of Maple XCMs (30mm internal width hookless*). Coincidentally, the tape is 30mm wide, but would work completely fine on rims 28-32mm. When you install the tape, pull with a little bit of pressure so it’s tight. You do not need to worry about getting the tape all the way down into the center channel. After you install the tire, the air pressure will push everything where it needs to go. This creates the best seal with very little chance of creases in the tape.

Next is the valve. Puncture a hole with an awl or small Philips head screw driver. Push the valve through with your thumb, install the O-ring and then the nut. Only tighten with your fingers. No need to wrench it down. The goal is to create a tight seal on the rubber grommet on the inside of the rim. This complete the air tight seal.

Install the tire, add some sealant and go ride. It really is that simple. Make sure you look pro and line up your tire logo with your valve and rim logos. I prefer to install one side completely then 3/4 of the other side. Then I add sealant and install the last part of the bead. I think this is easier and cleaner than injecting sealant.

* If you have hooked rims (mostly road rims these days), you want tape to match your internal width between the rim wall, not the rim hooks. For example, my set of Maple RCTs is 21mm between the hooks, but 25mm between the walls. So tape that is 25mm wide is the best option
